Weihenstephan is based at Freising, outside Munich, and is the oldest brewery in the World with records of brewing on the site going back to 1040.
The brewery has a close working partnership with the brewing department of the Technical University of Munich. It trains most head brewers in Germany and generates the yeast strains for most other German breweries.
Weihenstephan therefore combines the oldest traditional brewing skills with the most modern brewing technology.
The Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Laws) were announced on the steps of the brewery in 1516.
The most garlanded wheat beer brewery in the World.
Hazy gold beer with a rich aroma of banana, cloves, nutmeg and gentle hop resins. Creamy malt fills the mouth, balanced by fruit and spices, with a long, refreshing, complex finish in which ripe malt competes with the growing influence of spices and fruit, with late hint of hops.
Excellent dark wheat beer on the clovey side of the scale – with sour cherry, banana and some spicy clove in the taste and a good balance of sweet and sharp. Full and sweet and eminently drinkable” World Beer Awards panel.
Cloudy gold, single bock wheat beer. It has a substantial white head and a rich, complex aroma of banana bread, cloves, bubblegum and wheat. The lively palate is of more cloves, bananas and cream and orange juice. And the finish is long, creamy and mellow.
Crystal clear golden wheat beer with a frothy white head. On the nose are wonderful notes of banana, ripe apple and pear, with spicy vanilla accents, within a pale, wheat, bready malt aroma. On the palate there is a good yeasty spiciness with cinnamon, apple strudel and vanilla notes together with an underlying honeyed malt flavour.
Full-bodied amber Märzen with a fruity, fresh hoppiness and hints of caramel. Its distinctive taste comes from the combination of dark Munich and pale Pilsner malt with traditional hops such as the rare variety Hallertauer Record. It is matured long and cold in historic vaulted cellars under the brewery and is not filtered. The yeast settles down during the long maturation to give the beer its cloudy appearance.
Pale golden colour with frothy, white head. The nose is malty with notes of bread, grass, hay, cereal and a touch of vanilla. The taste is malty with hints of tropical fruit and a gentle grassy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a light sweetness. Tasty and well balanced.
Crystal clear straw coloured lager with a deep malt aroma and spicy aroma hop notes. The taste is of honey malt followed by a smooth floral tangy hop bitterness. The palate is light and crisp.
Black red beer with a fine tan head. The aromas are of toasted caramel and prunes, with a touch of smoke. The taste is rich-bodied with a seriously roasty, dry-bitterness that balances the sweetness. There are notes of burnt toffee, liquorice and a herbal bitterness in the finish.
